Sound too good to be true? It probably is. Consumer Reports recently published the following guidelines to avoid being stung by online job scams. The most common online scams...? Work-at-home opportunities for a fee, and identity theft. In the second case, individuals pose as a potential employer seeking information for a pre-employment background check. Keep yourself safe and follow these guidelines:

• Post your resume anonymously. Anonymous postings let you remove personal identifiers except an email address.

• Never put your social security number, date of birth, or other personal data on a resume.

• Don't agree online to a background check. You should first have a face-to-face interview, and give written consent.

• Don't pay up front for job placement. Most legitimate firms charge employers, not job-seekers.
